Infant Optics DXR 8 Video Baby Monitor Review – What Every Parent Needs?

Having a baby is a wonderful, magical time. It is also a time of great worry and concern. Another human being is now 100% reliant on you and you have the responsibility to make sure that the baby is always safe. It is no surprise, therefore, that most parents would want to invest in baby monitors, and that manufacturers are coming up with increasingly high tech devices to give parents that peace of mind that they desperately seek. One of those devices is the Infant Optics DXR 8 video baby monitor. So what is it that makes this device special?

What Is the Infant Optics DXR 8?

This particular baby monitor is said to be one of the best devices of its kind on the market today. It is the first ever to come with interchangeable optical lenses. This means that you get to decide the zoom and angle at which you want to watch your baby. It is a compact unit with a 3.5” LCD color screen and it comes with a sound-activated display and a retractable antenna.

Video and Audio

The video quality of this particular device is very high, as is the image, projecting a clear and smooth picture. The camera can easily be moved as much as 30 feet away from the base unit without any effect on the quality of the image. The device is also built to last you a lifetime. In fact, you can attach as much as four cameras to the base unit. Hence, if you decide to have another baby but your present child still needs to be monitored, you won’t have to purchase a whole new unit.

Functionality

The Infant Optics DXR 8 has been designed to be easy to use. Setting it up is incredibly easy to do, and it doesn’t take long to charge the unit either. In fact, most people will state that it works straight out of the box. It also comes with a power saving mode, which means that it will easily last the entire night without you having to worry about the batteries running out. As previously stated, the range of the device is very good. Some parents have moved it as far as 120 feet away from their baby, with several obstacles and obstructions in place, before they noticed any problems. In fact, according to the manufacturer, the device can pick up its signal up to 700 feet away, so long as there are no obstacles in the way.

Extra Features

Uniquely, this particular monitor also comes with a temperature indicator. This is very important, because it means that you can make sure that the temperature in the nursery is comfortable for the baby right where you are. If need be, you can adjust the thermostat, which is now done remotely in most homes as well.

Another nifty little extra is that it is possible to mount the camera onto a wall, should you not have any shelf space. Furthermore, it offers the capability to change the lens, being the first of its kind to offer this. Additionally, the lens that is included is an infrared LED lens, which means that you can see in the dark. This implies that you don’t have to leave the lights on in the baby’s room, ensuring that your baby’s sleep is undisturbed. Unfortunately, no night light or lullabies are included.

Customer Service

When you purchase your Infant Optics DXR 8, you will be protected for a full year for defective parts and labor. The company is well-known for excellent and responsive customer service, so if you have any issue, you can contact them straight away. They have a telephone number during office hours, or you can send their customer support team an email. People who used customer service have consistently said that they received a reply very quickly and that all their questions were thoroughly answered.

What We Liked About the Infant Optics DXR 8

  • Excellent sound and vision
  • You can hook up extra cameras if you have more children to monitor
  • It comes with a temperature monitor
  • It can be wall mounted as well
  • It has interchangeable lenses and is the first monitor of its kind to offer this
  • The lens is infrared, which means it can see in the dark and won’t wake your baby up
  • Excellent customer service and warranty for parts and labor

What We Didn’t Like About the Infant Optics DXR 8

  • Although it has interchangeable lens technology, it only comes with one lens. If you want a wide angle view, you need to purchase the lens separately.
  • Screen is a bit small
  • It does not allow you to take snapshots or record video
  • It does not come with an AV output or WiFi capability, which means you can’t hook it up to the television or to your smartphone.
  • It does not have a nightlight, nor does it come with lullabies to help soothe the baby.

The Final Verdict

The Infant Optics DXR 8 has some clear pros and cons. It is not the perfect device, but then no device will be perfect for everybody. This particular monitor does come close to perfection, however. The few elements that it is missing, such as WiFi technology, night lights, lullabies, and the ability to make recordings or take a snapshot, are really just extras anyway. The one big downside is that the device is advertised as having replaceable lens technology, but you only get one lens with it.

That said, its many advantages outweigh the negatives with ease. Reviewers consistently mention that they have yet to come across a device that offers sound and vision that are as clear and crisp as that of the Infant Optics DXR 8. At the end of the day, that is the most important thing of all, as this is precisely what you have purchased a monitor for. Add to that the fact that the device is incredibly easy to use and set up, and the fact that its performance is simply greater than that of any other baby monitor out there, and it quickly becomes easy to see why this one is 100% recommended.

From Infant Optics:

The parent unit features a 3.5” LCD color display that has a battery saving component whereby the screen is dark unless there is noise and then it will light up and show the baby moving around and transmit sound. The battery offers up to 10 hours of use when it’s in power-saving mode and when parents want total access, it will run for about 6 hours powering the LCD screen on a full-time basis. Parents can move the camera lens in several directions including a wide-angle view that allows you to see the entire room if you purchase the sold-separately wide angle lens. The parent unit is compact and easy to move around from place to place. It features a two-way radio communication system, as well as an alarm setting.

The Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Monitor is the first baby monitor with interchangeable lens technology. Three separate lens types normal, wide angle (sold separately) and zoom allow you to choose the most suitable focal length and viewing angle for the specific environment, just like a professional camera system. Video is streamed in real-time to a compact 3-1/2 in. LCD color display providing a crystal clear image. The DXR-8 is packed with a roster of advanced features for added convenience including remote camera pan/tilt, infrared night vision, talk-back function, room temperature sensor and more. A product usage procedure note has been incorporated in units shipped since March 2015 that explains this new software update where you can toggle the beeping warning alerts. For troubleshooting ‘stopped charging' issues, Kindly remove and replace the battery wiring so that the battery contacts can be in position.
