Having a baby is one of the biggest adventures anyone can have, as many of us already know. We all know that things do not always go as planned and the only thing that you can expect when you’re expecting is the occasional unplanned curve. This family guide to the movies thinks that What to Expect When You’re Expecting is an adult movie about an adult topic. It profiles the lives of five interconnected young couples as they go through the thrills and chills of having their first baby.

The movie, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, delves deeply into the birds and the bees. It is a detailed look at having a baby. It might be too detailed for many young audiences. Although it does not cross the line in terms of content to be considered an R, it is about a mature adult theme. It is a big screen comedy that many audience members will be able to relate to. The same may not be said for the younger audience.

The comedic element of the movie What to Expect When You’re Expecting is through the personalities and conflicts within. It is an intimate look at parenthood, perhaps a little too intimate for young audiences. The What to Expect When You’re Expecting movie was done tastefully, but the subject is what it is and one cannot change the facts of life. The movie is funny and a humorous look at something every parent can relate to, but not necessarily something that we want our children to relate to yet.

The What to Expect When You’re Expecting movie is not graphic in any way, but there are plenty of sexual references. Some are subtle, some are not so subtle. There is lots of talk about “trying” to get pregnant. One character says, “There are no blanks in this pistol.” There are plenty of references such as this throughout the movie.

Once the babies have arrived, the fathers are a comedy of errors. They talk about all of the mistakes that they have made, some of which are not appropriate for all audiences. One father admits dropping his baby on the changing table, one caught his kid swimming in the toilet, and one talks about his kid eating a cigarette. One has to wonder where the humor is in this, but these were portrayed as comedy in the movie. This family movie review does not think What to Expect When You’re Expecting is appropriate for younger audiences, but yet, it does not meet the criteria for an R rated movie. It is just not good family fun, but it is an education in the realities of the birds and bees.
