This movie guide thinks that War Horse is a Christmas delight that will be sure to please both horse lovers and non-horse lovers in your family. Set against the backdrop of the rural English countryside during World War I, this story tells the tale of timeless love between a man and his horse. Everyone who is a horse lover knows that the relationship between a horse and their human companion goes beyond work and play. It is a deep relationship that creates friends that last a lifetime and beyond. This is the case with War Horse.
Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, know exactly what that special bond is all about. However, their special bond is broken when Joey is sold to the British cavalry. Albert, too young to enlist himself, travels to France to save his best friend. War Horse is a heart wrenching story that is every bit as endearing as Black Beauty and this family movie guide feels that it is bound to be a classic.
This movie guide has to tell you that this movie has violent war scenes that might frighten the very young, but those 8 years old and older would love it. This movie does take viewer deep into the violence and reality of the trench warfare tactics of World War I. From a historical perspective, it makes that history class discussion a little more real. However, the reality of this time period is what it is and for those who are not prepared for this much insight into our past, it might be a little much.
This movie is a tear-jerker for everyone. It is a story about hope and triumph over adversity. It is a story about a love that endures over the worst of circumstances. Directed by Steven Spielberg, who could expect anything but perfection? The perfect, storyline, the perfect characters, the perfect setting…and oh yes, the perfect horse…there is nothing that this movie does not have to offer. This movie is a family film classic that must be seen during the holiday vacation. Only one word of caution, take a box of Kleenex along, family size preferred, because War Horse will melt your heart.
