by Ginger Shelby

Did you ever wake up and just know that it was going to be one of those days? This must have been what Thomas thought when we woke up in a broken down elevator and had no idea how he got there. The only thing that he could remember was his own name. This exactly what happens in the first few scenes of The Maze Runner. For Thomas, the day starts out bad and only gets worse. This is an interesting plot, but it might not be for all members of the family according to this family movie review.

First, let's get back to our main man, Thomas. Soon after waking up in the elevator with no memory of how he got there, he soon discovers that he is in a maze surrounded by 150 foot high walls. He and approximately 60 other teenage boys are trapped in this bizarre and frightening world. They must combine forces in order to find their way out. Some of the boys have been in “The Glade” for two years, subsisting by growing their own food. A new boy arrives every 30 days. The boys are beginning to lose hope, but that is when things get even stranger. A comatose girl arrives with a strange note attached to her. Everything is about to change, as the boys fight for their lives and to try to escape.

This movie is bound to be a sci-fi classic. There are some references to drugs and alcohol, but they are only mentioned. There are none in the movie. There are some occurrences of foul language by the teenage boys, but they are not frequent and typically at moments of surprise. This movie did not contain any sexual scenes, other than a friendship between the female characters and the male characters. Some boys walk around without shirts in the hot weather.

However, this is a violent movie. One boy is stabbed. Several boys are dragged off to be eaten by frightening creatures. Throughout the movie are these creatures called “grievers” who eat some of the boys. Being bitten by the Grievers turns the boys insane, which is disturbing to say the least. A woman shoots herself and commits suicide. Dead bodies are shown throughout the movie. The Grievers are frightening, creating tension and suspense throughout.

The violence in the movie is dark and graphic in nature. This movie is much too intense for the younger members of the family. It can be compared to The Hunger Games series in the emotional intensity of the scenes. This movie is suggested for 13 and above, simply due to the intensity of the violence, and the fact that the violence involves teenage boys. This parental guide to the movies thinks that parents should use caution when taking the family to see this one.
