The Lazarus Effect is a horror movie that may be too disturbing even for some adults. In this movie, as group of researchers believes that they may have found a way to bring the dead back to life. In this grown-up version of Pet Cemetery, this group of scientists first tries the new technique on a recently deceased animal. They now feel that it is time to bring this unsanctioned experiment to a larger audience, but as human motives stand, they do not stop with animating lost pets. This family movie review thinks that aside from horror references, this movie deals with some tough ethical and moral issues. It may not be right for even older members of the family.

After the Dean of the university learns of their rogue experiments, he confiscates their equipment and has the experiment shut down. Of course, it would not be a good movie if the young scientists did not take matters into their own hands. As expected, things go terribly wrong. When one of the team members, Zoe, is killed grief stricken team member Frank decides to resurrect her in the first human test. Those that are grieving over loss may wish to refrain from this one. The scenes are emotionally intense. The attempt at reviving Zoe seems to be successful, but before long, they begin to realize that Zoe is not her old self. She becomes their worst nightmare.

Aside from this macabre and gruesome plot, the movie also makes several sexual references and a girl is seen in her bra. There are a few instances of profanity, usually in reference to fear. There is some celebratory drinking when the dog is resurrected. However, the blood and gore factor are what send this one over the top in the opinion of this family movie guide.

Zoey becomes violent and angry after her reanimation. A woman is electrocuted. The dog is injected with an anesthetic and then electrocuted. The body violently jumps. There are repeated scenes of a burning buildings with charred bodies. A man is thrown across the room with Zoeyäó»s telekinetic abilities. Zoey twists a womanäó»s neck until it breaks. Zoey then begins to animate dead friends, creating more demonic monsters like herself.

It think we can stop there. You get the picture. Aside from the moral issues of animating the dead, this one has a fright and gore factor that is through the roof. You might not sleep well after this one. This movie will be sure to please those who cannot get enough of that adrenaline rush, but for the rest, The Lazarus Effect might not be the best choice for entertainment.
