The Book of Life tells the story of Manolo. It is an animated coming of age comedy about a young man who must make the decision between fulfilling the expectations set for him by his family or following his own heart. He must choose which path to follow, but before he does, he must go on an incredible adventure that spans three fantasy worlds. This family movie review thinks this is an adventure that the entire family will enjoy, but first, let’s see a little more of what Manolo has in store.
Manolo is in love with a beautiful princess, but she is playing a little hard to get. Manolo will do anything to be with his beloved Maria, but he is not Maria’s only suitor. He must compete against Joaquin if he wishes to become her prince. The spirits make a bet as to which one will eventually win the hand of Maria. The spirits are La Muerte and Xibalba. When it looks like Maria is about to fall for Manolo and Xibalba is about to lose the bet, he decides to intervene. He sends a snake to kill Manolo, which would leave Joaquin the only choice for Maria. Manolo is cast into the spirit world. In order to return to the real world and win the hand of Maria, he must embark on an incredible journey and face his greatest fears. His only tools on the journey are his guitar, his two swords, and his wit.
This movie was rated a PG for mild, action, rude humor, and some thematic elements. The spirit that sends Manolo to the other worlds is frightening. This move might be too scary for the very youngest of the family, but for the most part it is appropriate for all ages. The imagery in this move is bright and detailed. It is beautifully drawn and this family movie review thinks that it will be great fun for everyone.
