Romance is blossoming on the big screen this Valentines day. This young adult movie has secrets to keep. Safe Haven is about a woman who is running from her past. She decides to settle, at least for a while, in a small Southern town. She must decide whether to stay or whether to move on, so in the beginning she keeps a distance and rejects forming relationships. She inadvertently draws the attention of a man with two kids who has lost his wife and now must live life as a single father. He wants Katie to stay, but Katie knows that eventually her past will catch up with her. She must decide whether to keep running, or whether her new love in the town offers her a Safe Haven from her past. This is not a movie for kids, because it evolves around an adult romance. It tells the story from the perspective of the adults, rather than the kids. The kids are a peripheral in the movie and do not me play a major role. They are adorable though.
This movie was rated PG-13 for sexual and thematic content and this family movie review has to agree. The movie contains threatening actions by the person who is chasing the main character down. It does involve violence and sexual behavior between two adults, perhaps a little bit too much for kid’s movies.
Safe Haven is an emotional suspense that centers more on Katie’s decision of whether to stay or keep running from her past. This movie has strong characterization and the creators draw the audience into their world. The theme of the movie is that love can conquer all, making it the perfect release for Valentine’s Day. There are lots of romantic beach scenes, canoe rides and plenty of places and ways for couples to connect. Yet, in the background of all of this romantic action, is the feeling that whatever Katie is running from will eventually show up. When it does, it wants her dead. This movie gives the viewers equal portions of romance and suspense, but in the end love conquers all.
This movie is made for two people holding hands. The kids will probably yawn and moan at this one. The sexual references are subtle and suggested, rather than overt. This romantic movie is a great date night for Mom and Dad. The best suggestion for this one is to leave the kids with grandma and go enjoy dinner and a romantic movie for the two of you. It was rated PG-13 and this rating seems appropriate. Teens that like a good romance may enjoy this one, but they would probably enjoy Beautiful Creatures better than this one because it involves teenage characters.
