In 1982, humans launched a time capsule into space in order to contact alien life. The time capsule attempted to represent many aspects of life on earth. Unfortunately, the message was misinterpreted as a threat of war. An alien race attacked the Earth in the form of video game classics. The movie has the typical silliness of an Adam Sandler movie, but this movie might not be the best kid’s movie, even though it is intended for kids. It might be too intense for the smaller children, due to the intensity of the violence.

The heroes in this movie are arcade legends, but now they must use their video game skills to save the world. This time the video games are for real. This is a violent movie and the imagery might be too intense for children under age 6. The geeks rule in this movie. However, there is some violent gunfire, exploding buildings, and a Smurf gets killed. The battle is surprisingly frightening considering it involves video games. When a person gets bitten by a video game character, they begin to “pixelate” a painful process. The Donkey Kong master is in prison and is offered the chance to get out of jail if he uses his talents to save the world. This master knows who hold the cards. One of his demands for his “services” is that he wants a romantic night with Martha Stewart and Serena Williams in the Lincoln Bedroom.

This movie uses suggested violence, not direct violence. For instance, a barrel explodes and a giant Pac-Man is seen eating a fire truck, but one does not see the humans injured. It is only suggested that they are injured. There is no profanity, but a man is called “stupid.” There are some frightening scenes of people pixelating that might be disturbing to some children. This parental guide to the movies suggests that this movie is a refreshing plot twist, but not for those below school age.
