Billy Crystal, John Goodman and Steve Buscerni top off the all-star voice over cast for this delightful animated story in Monster University. This sequel to Monster, Inc. takes a look back at the relationship between Mike and Sully during their college days. They were not always best friends and had to learn to get along. This movie has a positive theme about treating each other nice and resolving differences with others. This movie has been rated G, and this family movie review has to agree that this movie is fun for the whole family.
The monsters are absolutely adorable. I must admit that I was a little concerned when I first heard that they were doing a G movie that revolved around life in a frat house. Fortunately, Oozma Kappa is tamer than I would have expected. This is a movie to which every kid can relate as they explore and discover themselves. The characters are a mixture of teenager and college age. They are supposed to be in college, but one of the running gags is that one of the characters keeps losing his retainer.
In many respects, this Monsters, Inc sequel is similar to the original. Disney/Pixar makes these fantastic characters human enough to make them lovable. Monster University is a school where the monsters must learn to be scary. It is nonstop laughs. The monsters trying to be scary were done in such as way that it would be difficult to imagine them being too scary for any audience.
This movie is surprisingly funny for the adults, even though it is a G movie. Many references are there are the adults, especially for those who went to college. There is plenty of slap-stick comedy for the kids, but the adults will enjoy this one just as much as the little ones. This movie does another thing too, it promotes the positive aspects of college life. It makes kids want to study hard and go to college.
The main theme of the movie is the ability to overcome differences and learn to get along with each other. The secondary theme promotes higher education and doing one’s best to succeed. With these two concepts as the main theme, it is difficult to find fault with this movie as good family fun. This kids movie review gives Monster University a big thumbs up.
