Everybody loves the minions and minion fans are sure to have a treat with the new Minions movie. The movie is about what minions do best, serve evil masters. This movie will take you from the beginning of time through 1960s New York City as minions serve the most evil master of all time. This movie was rated PG for mild humor and action, but this family movie review thinks that it might contain some thematic material that might be offensive to some.
The movie begins with the evolutionary history of the minions, beginning as single-celled yellow organisms. The movie follows them through time as they serve T. Rexes, Napoleon, and eventually a modern day supervillain, played by Sandra Bullock. After serving Napoleon, the minions find themselves in a crisis and sink into a depression. It seems that there are no more evil masters to serve. Rebellious minions, Stuart and Bob decide to venture out to find a new evil master to follow. This is when they meet Scarlet Overkill, the world’s most evil villain ever. They find themselves on a quest to save all minionland from complete destruction.
This worldwide adventure involves all the minion antics. All of the masters end up meeting their demise in creative, yet violent ways. T-Rex is shoved off a cliff into a volcano. Caveman is eaten by a bear. The evil king is pierced with a sword. Napoleon is short from a canon. Dracula evaporates into dust. Scarlet Overkill has her sights on the English throne. She punches, kicks, and fights. In the end, she pulls out a multi-barreled gun with the business end pointed towards the movie audience.
There is one scene where a woman lifts up her sweater at the bust to reveal two eyes looking out from where the breasts should be. There is a minion who is seen from behind with a thong and towel before getting into a hottub. The Queen of England slaps a minion. There is lots of face licking throughout the movie. There is one scene where a minion is hit in the “privates”. The movie does contain a guillotine and noose scene. The minions turn all of these various violent acts and suggestions of violence into fun and games. The minions slap, and hit each other continually. Some parents might find this treatment of violence offensive.
The entire theme of the movie is that it is good to be bad. The MPAA rated this one a PG for action and rude humor. If one considers the overall theme of the movie and the level of violence portrayed in the individual scenes, this one can hardly be counted as appropriate themes for children. Minions might be a cartoon that involves cute little yellow creatures, but this Parental Guide to the movies thinks that it might not be right for all ages or for all families.
