In Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a young CIA analyst discovers a plot to crash the U.S. economy using a well-placed terrorist attack. Jack Ryan must stop them in the action adventure. As with many films of this nature, the plot line is simple because the movie is focused on body counts and bullet counts rather than actual storyline. This parental guide to the movies does not consider this a movie that is appropriate for children.

The MPAA consistently rates these types of action movies as a PG-13, even though they contain too much violence to even count. This movie is about a terrorist plot in the aftermath of the World Trade Tower bombings that is designed to destroy the United States economy. This one is more violent than Jack Ryan movies of the past. Modern standards of violence are more tolerant than they used to be. There are continual gun, fist, and knife fights. It is difficult to find a stretch in the film where they are not present. The violence is graphic, not simply suggested in this movie. They tried to make it as realistic as possible. Blood from gunshot wounds is seen and martial arts weaponry is used.

As with the violence, I stopped counting the number of times profanity and f-bombs were used. There were too many to count. There were some kisses on the cheek between Jack and his Wife in a tender moment, but not particularly passionate, just affectionate. Somebody is trying to kill Jack and there are numerous close calls.

This high stakes, action espionage film is not child’s play. This parental guide to the movies thinks that it is inappropriate for children under the age of thirteen. It may not be a good choice for many adults, particularly those who are sensitive to violence and frightening scenes. For those that enjoy this type of movie, this one is sure to please. Just be sure that it is appropriate for all members of the family before buying the popcorn.
