When the first name on the billing is Peter Segal and this is followed by Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Kim Basinger, and Alan Arkin, you know that there are going to be some fists flying in this one. In Grudge Match, Sylvester Stallone gets to relive his younger days in the ring as Rocky. This time, slightly graying hair, he and a rival in the ring decide to put their gloves on for one last round before retirement. The world of boxing is not a tame place, and this one does not pull punches. This may not be the best kid’s movie for the holiday.
As expected, this one has violence, sexual content and some strong language. This should not surprise anyone, given the cast. Razor and Kid only fought twice, but they were intense rivals. This movie is a bit more tongue in cheek than Rocky and Stallone’s previous boxing movies. The question is whether these two overweight marshmallows can get back in shape to pull it off. One of the best lines in the movie is if one of them falls is it safe to say they have fallen and they cannot get up. Yes, this movie makes fun of middle age and it makes fun of mid life crisis.
A wrinkled and grey Stallone does a little bit of Rocky style training that we all loved. It is a blast from the past, only not as ripped as in the first movies. These two archrivals now have social media and are quickly becoming a sensation. Their greatest challenge is that they are not as young as they used to be. The kids may not understand these nuances, but they will understand the theme of overcoming challenges. They insist on not going out gracefully, but both of them have a score to settle.
The question is if Grudge Match is the best movie for kids. The answer to that question depends on how you feel about violence and the sport of boxing. If you like two old guys duking it out in the ring, then this movie is for you. It is a blast from the past for Rocky fans with an all-star cast. This movie is the WWF version of the wayback machine. If you saw the original Rocky movies, then changes are you know about the wayback machine too. Is this a kid’s movie? The answer is maybe, maybe not. The world of boxing is a violent sport, but this move takes a comedic approach to the subject matter. At their age, humor may be the only way for these old geezers to survive.
