Epic is an animated film that takes you deep into the heart of the forest. This movie is from the director of Ice Age and is bound to be a classic. This delightful film will warm the hearts of kids and parents alike. With an all-star cast including Pitbull, Beyonce, and Steve Tyler doing the voice overs, this is bound to become a classic in the family movie collection. You might want to buy several to have around for when the first one wears out for being played too much.

In this movie, the main character, Mary Katherine, called M.K., is separated from her father. She goes to visit him in his house near a deep forest. Her father, Professor Bomba, has found many artifacts in the forest that lead him to believe that there are little people in the forest who protect it. He sets up cameras and makes many trips into the forest in hopes of confirming their existence. He is so wrapped up in his work that M.K. feels neglected. She writes him a note to put on one of his computer monitors telling him goodbye. Just as she is about to leave, Professor Bomba's dog Ozzie runs away into the forest.

M.K. runs into the forest after her father's dog. She finds a bunch of glowing falling leaves. When she catches one of them, she shrinks. This is when she finds herself right in the middle of the tiny world that her father always said existed, but that no one else could see. She arrives just in time to help with a war to save the forest. The war is against a group of evil doers set on destroying the forest called the Boggans. The Boggans intend to rot the forest. M.K. soon discovers that their worlds are connected. If the forest dies, so does her world.

The movie is based on a book by William Joyce called The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs. The movie is not a direct take-off from the book. They main resemblances are through the adoption of several characters from the book. The concept is similar, but it is not a movie made from the book. If your kids have read the book, you might want to tell them this beforehand so that they do not expect the book on screen.

This is a wonderful story with a strong message about ecosystems and ecology. It is about respect for all life and accepting all people. The movie was rated PG, rather than a G, for mild scary action and some scary images. The MPAA also mentioned brief rude language. This movie may not be for those under four years old. The main evil character, Mandrake, is frightening looking. There are also some exciting battle scenes, involving air acrobatics with soldiers riding on hummingbirds. The scenes are scary, but they are mild enough for all but the most sensitive children.

This is an excellent family movie for the whole family. The theme of the movie is a positive one about love and acceptance. It has a positive message about relationships and the people that you love. It is about believing in magic and things that you cannot see with your eyes. This magical voyage will be fun for the entire family. This family movie review considers this movie to become a classic that will be in the movie collection for many years to come.
