In Earth to Echo a group of teens receives a set of strange text messages after a construction project begins in their neighborhood. They come across a strange creature and strange things start happening to them. No one will believe them, but they must find a way to make them believe. This family movie review thinks this one is too scary for the little ones. The teens are in danger and the creature, although not actually seen, is frightening.

It is produced by Walt Disney, so they kept the profanity and other adult content out of it. The being in the movie is not out to get them or destroy humanity, it needs their help, but the film technique makes it a little too real. The movie uses a home movie type of format, similar to the Blair Witch Project. You see much of the action as if it were seen though a webcam. The movie pays homage to the 1980s classics ET and Close Encounters.

The three boys must crack the code and find out where it is coming from. The journey takes them to something bigger than they ever imagined. It is full of suspense, but not necessarily terrifying. The suspense reminds one of the type of suspense used in ET before the boy discovers him. It I similar to the time when mother ship starts singing her familiar four note song and you don’t know whether everyone is going suddenly get blasted with death rays. This movie takes those moment so suspense and drags them out for the entire length of the movie.

This movie is suspenseful throughout, more because you know something is going to happen, but you don’t know what. This movie is appropriate for school aged children who are ready for a few mild goose bumps. They used horror film suspense technique, but they kept it family friendly.
