The favorite kids book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day can make everyone feel better. First, Alexander wakes up with gum in his hair, but that is not the worst of it. Things get worse for Alexander, but not before he makes the entire family laugh at his expense, but he doesnäó»t mind, we promise. This kid’s movie review thinks that a day with Alexander will make anyone feel much better in the end.

The movie was rated PG for rude humor, reckless behavior, and strong language, but anyone who has read the book already knows that. This is one of the books on many state reading lists, but donäó»t think that you can get away with just watching the movie. The teacher will know for sure if you do. There were quite a few embellishments in the movie that are not in the book. You will have to read the book to know what they are.

The book is appropriate for children, but the movie is not so tame. In the beginning of the movie, Alexander’s teenage brother is talking on the phone with his girlfriend and says, “Don’t get me started on that cute little butt of yours.” He says this in front of his younger brother Alexander. Yes, this is real life when you have teenagers and younger ones in the house at the same time, but it is up to you whether you want your kids to see a movie that models this behavior. He throws a phone across the room and hits Alexander. Alexander wants to impress a girl as well, but he continually keeps doing clumsy things like fall on his face when she is around. Someone takes pictures of Alexander, puts his head on a girl’s body and sends them to the whole school. A boy remarks to him, “Nice boobs Alexander.”

Everything is going great for the rest of his family, but as the movie says, one day can change everything. The family wakes up with a bad day. During this time, the Mom walks in on her teenage son, who is taking a shower. He is seen naked from the waist up. His brother goes to take his driver’s exam, answers a phone call while taking the test and wrecks the vehicle. The family starts falling apart and yelling at each other. Alexander is a pro at surviving bad days, so he teaches his family how to cope, even when faced with angry kangaroos who are good at kickboxing.

This is a cute movie that is loosely based on the book. It is good family fun, but with due warnings about potential objectionable content. It is up to every family to decide what is appropriate for their family. The parental guide to the movies gives you the tools that you need to make the decision for you.
