Considering that the first book I ever read was by Stephen King, this movie scares even me. This family movie review does not feel that this movie is for any but the most hardened veteran of the horror genre. The Woman in Black has it all, a spooky old castle, stormy night, rocking chairs that rock by themselves, and ghostly footsteps that echo through the halls at night. The plot is simple; a ghost who is set on revenge terrorizes a town. This movie sounds cliché’, but don’t let this fool you. The Woman in Black movie is a classic tale, using classic horror bump in the night themes, but this movie was well done, so well that it will have you jumping at shadows and sleeping with the light on for days or maybe even weeks.
This parental guide to the movies has to dub this one with a word of caution about taking those below age 13 to see it. Preteens would be OK, but only if they have been exposed to horror movies in the past. This is not a good choice for a first horror movie. The content of the movie is violent and disturbing. The themes in the movie are very disturbing, involving harm done to children. It is very frightening, regardless of one’s age.
The Woman in Black movie was one of the most well done ghost stories that have come out in a while. I was actually beginning to think that the glory days of the horror genre were beginning to fade. The Woman in Black movie convinced me that even though there are few new and original plots, there are still excellent horror movies yet to be made. As a horror movie, this family movie guide has to say that this was a welcome break from others that have been produced lately, but it is not a movie for young children. The Woman in Black movie was meant to scare you, and it does.
The Woman in Black movie was well written and directed with great attention to detail. The lighting, soundtrack, décor, and other movie elements coalesced into a soup that equals a thrilling ride. If you are afraid of the dark, you will be even more so after this movie. If you are a horror fan, this is one not to miss, but if these types of movies are not your cup of tea, then definitely stay away from this one.
