YO HO HO and a bottle of fun! That is what this family movie review sees in store when you take your kids to see this cartoon adventure, The Pirates! Band of Misfits. In this swashbuckling adventure Pirate Captain must defeat his arch rivals, Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz so that he can gain the coveted Pirate of the Year Award (Yes, you read that right). This adventure takes you and your kids from the shores of Blood Island to the always foggy streets of Victorian London.
The Pirates! Band of Misfits is a pirate movie, so that means that it is rated PG for some mild action, rude humor, and some mildly offensive language. Actually, believe it or not, it has some surprising sexual innuendos for a kid’s movie. A scientist makes a device that is “good for looking down ladies tops.’ Really guys, come on now, did you have to say that when you were making a kid’s movie? Wouldn’t the movie have been just as good without that line?
Aside from these lighthearted piraty references, they do use “arse’ and “crap.’ There is off screen death from stabbing, suggested by a groan and then a thud as the dead hit the ground. These are the types of elements that earned The Pirates! Band of Misfits a PG, rather than a G rating. There are also several intensely frightening scenes that might be too much for the wee little ones.
Other than a few instances such as those mentioned, this is a fun pirate movie. Everybody loves a pirate that can moonwalk, sing, dance, whose ship has backing lights. The Pirates! Band of Misfits is a really cute movie that makes fun of almost every pirate cliché that you can think of and then some. If you don’t mind the pirate language and comments mentioned above, then The Pirates! Band of Misfits movie should be a load of fun for you and your family. Be sure not to miss this full sail movie that is scheduled to set sail April 27, 2012!
