Movie Review for Parents - Our View

-by Allison

The Goonies is a teen-version of an action/adventure movie. It draws on the mystery and intrigue of pirate adventures. The Goonies embark on their quest that leads them through underground passages, behind waterfalls and to a pirate ship. This adventure with a classic good vs. evil theme is entertaining and captures the imagination. You will be cheering for the Goonies as they try to beat the clock. It’s an exploration of childhood friendships and imaginations.

A word of warning, if you get the movie on DVD (rather than the made-for-TV-version) you should be aware that it contains higher than normal foul language especially in the first half hour of the movie-- the “S” word is tossed around quite a bit along with the "D" word, "what the" "h" word, "A" word and more. There are references to drugs, mention of sexual torture, a male anatomy part that comes off a statue, a dead body and a small scene were two teens share a first kiss.

This comedy-adventure is great for families with children ages 12 and up. The Goonies is a classic good vs. evil entertaining story takes you on an underground adventure of exploration and courage. There are a few mildly scary parts, as well as some skulls and bones, but remind the children of fiction vs. reality and focus on the funny. Cheer on the Goonies, the adventure is well worth it.

This family move guide recommends the TV version for family viewing versus the DVD. The film stirs an underlying message about accepting others for who they are on the inside and the triumph of the underdog. Discover old favorites and new family movies in our top 15 favorite family movies.
