The Dilemma is another movie that this family movie review has to include in the category of technically PG-13, but with adult content. The movie centers around the dilemma created when a man discovers that his best friend’s wife is having an affair. The plot centers on the best friend’s attempts to gain answers.
However, as expected, the plot thickens as he discovers that not only does his best friend’s wife have secrets, his best friend has some too. If he reveals the truth to his best friend, the main character, played by Ron Howard, will risk the biggest business opportunity of perhaps his entire life. The main character must decide whether to tell his best friend and risk the business deal or to keep quiet for the sake of money.
First of all, I could not picture my own pre-teen being even remotely interested in this movie. She would not understand the adult nuances and the complexities of the plot. These adult themes are presented in tongue in cheek manner that makes them seem to be normal adult behavior. It contains threats of violence, drinking, adultery, and allusions to incestual relationships. The MPAA agreed that adult themes were the reason for the upgrade from a PG to a PG-13. However, I would not recommend the movie for young teens. It shows adults behaving badly and presents poor role models for those trying to make their way in the world.
