Movie Review for Parents

-by Ginger

Children witness a mysterious train crash and after that strange things start to happen around their town. Super 8 is about a supernatural force that is unleashed during the train crash. This is a dark, sci-fi horror film that is meant to scare. Since it is meant to scare, this family movie review has to agree that it met its goals. The beginning of the movie portrays a truck being hit by a train violently. The violence is graphic and over the top in many places. The villain in the movie is a monster that has supernatural powers.

The movie was rated PG 13 for several scenes that involve teenage romantic encounters. In one scene a girl kisses a boy on his neck and leaves a lipstick imprint. One of the more explicit scenes appears when a boy tells a girl that he wants to “go to first base” when he gets his driver’s license. Several young teens are seen in mid-drift exposing clothing. However, the parents of the girl indicate that this is not appropriate for her. A boy is seen sitting in a bathtub but there is no visible nudity on the screen.

This movie has multiple violent scenes that include blood and Gore. Inappropriate language is used multiple times throughout the movie. There is too much inappropriate language to even begin to name. There are also scenes of alcohol and smoking throughout the movie. This is a very scary movie and has frightening scenes throughout. The scenes appear suddenly without any warning and there are many times when something frightening happens in a way that makes the audience jump. This family movie review feels that it did not cross the line into an R rating, but it is not appropriate for small children, or even preteens.

This movie would be OK for teenagers, as long as they like horror flicks. They must be prepared that this is not a gentle movie, but the special effects in it are destined to become a classic. This movie is not for the weak at heart or those who are frightened easily. One of the most disturbing things about this movie from a parent’s perspective is that it showed violence against children. I found this to be particularly frightening myself. If you are the type that has nightmares, stay away from this one. If you want a scary movie, this family movie review has to recommend Super 8 to foot the bill.
