Movie Review for Parents

-by Ginger

First it was Saturday Night Fever. The 1980s saw Flash Dance, Footloose, Dirty Dancing, and the Urban Cowboy. Can anybody else think of any more dance movies right now? Well, it’s 2010 and now we have Step Up…in 3D. In the age of the Internet, now everyone can get in one the action and upload videos of their own version via Facebook and other social networking channels.

This kid gone bad movie tells the story of a teen who vandalizes a dance studio. He is sentenced to 200 hours of community service at the school. During this time, he sees a dance practice session. He sees a young dancer whose partner sprains his ankle. She is looking for a partner, and guess who fits the bill? Nora and Tyler grow romantically closer as they practice together. See, I told you it sounds familiar. Does romance win in the end of this one? Watch the movie and see…no spoilers here please.

The dancing is racey and sexy at times due to the type of moves, no nudity though. Much is hop-hop, but there is a sexy element to it in some places. I think that Dirty Dancing was far worse. The dance competition sequences are excellent and spectacular. Teens would love it. It has current hip-hop stars and dance moves. It is aimed at a teen demographic. However, it is not terrible for tweens. It is based on a real event in New York City. If you are into dance, this is the place.
