There are many reasons why single parenting may occur. Regardless of the reasons that sole parent must take on double their responsibility. This can be difficult for any person who is adjusting to a new baby. Single parents are the sole support system for their child as well as their sole provider. Most single parents must work twice as hard to achieve the life that their child would have received with two parents. In 2000 there were approximately 13.5 million single parents within the United States alone. With this number it is easy to see that single parents are becoming more common within our society, and also more widely accepted.
The biggest concern about single parenting is the child, or children. Single parents must have the capacity to handle raising a child alone, while working, and handling all other life events. This can be a great concern for the parent and other family members of the child. More often than not single parents must have, sometimes more than one, full time job and usually its away from home. When their child is small that means that they will be paying for daycare services to take care of their child. This not only makes for an extra bill at the end of the month it also takes away time that the parent should be spending with their child. It is hard for any parent to leave the care of their child in the hands of another person.
However, there are many advantages of single parenting that are not often discussed. When you are a single parent, you are the one making all of the decisions in your household. Often times there are disagreements between spouses regarding discipline and other activities involving the child, these disagreements are eliminated. Single parents also often have stronger bonds with their child then children who have two parents. This is partly because all of the child’s attention is focused on the sole parent and vice versa, a third person in the mix takes focus from both individuals. Another reason they are so bonded is that they go through all of lifes trials, often times, only having each other. Another benefit of being a single parent is the feeling of knowing that your child benefits from your actions alone. There is no feeling greater than working everyday knowing that it is what will keep you and your child on your feet.
