Movie Review for Parents

-by Ginger

In this modern day version of Mary Poppins meets The Nanny with a smattering of Harry Potter thrown in, a magically inclined nanny steps in to rescue a harried mother. The movie is about a family who must make ends meet on the family farm while the father is off to war. Everything was fine until two spoiled cousins move in. From that point on, the children never stop squabbling and fighting. Nanny McPhee steps in to save the day and restore order and tranquility to the family.

The MPAA rates this as a PG for rude humor, some language and certain themes. Overall, I am not sure how these points relate to the movie, unless it is the fact that the father is off to war and the family is in danger of losing the family farm. I thought that this was a delightful film for children of all ages. I think that the overall positive themes outweigh any negative themes in the movie. The children must learn to get along, stop fighting and clean their rooms. What is wrong with that? I think that the movie models good coping skills and the ability to endure through sticking together. I don’t think that any negative themes would stick out in children’s minds as much as the overriding positive themes, which are really driven home throughout the movie.

This is a wonderful movie where the children learn to get along and learn their lessons through the Mary Poppins – like magic of Nanny McPhee. However, instead of floating down the staircase, Nanny McPhee makes a motorcycle fly, a statue come to life, and makes pigs fly. There is also the mysterious elephant that pops in at the most unexpected times. I definitely have to give the creators a ten for originality. The pigs doing synchronized swimming were really just too much for me, so cute! Emma Thompson plays a delightful character as Nanny McPhee. Take the kids to see the movie, but be sure to mind your manners!
