The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Movie Review for Parents

-by Ginger

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a remake of the 1939 classic based on a short story by James Thurber. This kid's movie review thinks that this is a wonderful fantasy to delight the senses. It is the perfect fantasy follow up to a morning of opening Santa's presents. Walter Mitty goes out with his wife on their regular weekly shopping trip, but this trip turns out to be anything by ordinary. Walter Mitty is a dreamer and this move explores his adventures in five heroic daydreams. So what do you want to be when you grow up Mr. Mitty?

In the original adventure has him powering up a Navy Hydroplane and driving very fast. Next, he takes his turn as a famous surgeon. Then, he finds himself in a courtroom drama attempting to remember what his wife told him to buy. After that, Mr. Mitty finds himself in World War II about to go on a dangerous journey. This parental guide to the movies will not give you the spoilers, but Mitty's adventures have been brought into the technological age.

Directors Ron Howard and Stephen Spielberg put a wonderful twist on this new version based on the original. Their rendition is delightful, but still may not be the perfect kid's movie match for all audiences. It does have some action oriented violence and a few rude comments. Fused with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Walter Mitty is a man that "zones" out and sees many things that are not there. Pictures talk to him and beckon him in.

Every hapless daydreamer will love this film. This movie was made with the family in mind. Adult content was kept to a minimum, but it is still there in some ways. The movie centers on adults, but it has many fantasy elements. Some of the action scenes may be too scary for children under the age of five. There are some scary ski scenes and helicopter rides. However, for the most part, this will be a movie that the entire family would enjoy. It makes an excellent follow-up to the stuffing and gravy.
