The Imitation Game is based on the real life story of cryptographer Alan Turing. The movie is a race against time. Turing and his team of code breakers at Britain's top secret Government Code and Cypher Schools must race to break the Nazi code. This movie is considered a historical thriller. Turing must break Nazi Germany's famous Enigma code, a move that helped the Allies win World War II. Turing was a hero. The film follows his life from his unhappy teen years at boarding school to his entrance into the war as a codebreaker. During his career he broke 3,000 Enigma-generated naval codes, which led to the Ally victory.
The movie was rated PG-13 for some mild sexual references and adult themes. There is also some smoking throughout. In the end of the movie, Turing is convicted of gross indecency for homosexual acts. This law is no longer on the books, but it was at the time of the setting of the movie. This is what the MPAA called "mild" sexual references. This topic of Turing's homosexuality takes up a considerable portion of the last part of the film. The film builds up a relationship with Joan Clarke to more that it was in real life.
