Divergent Movie Review for Parents

-by Ginger

Are you ready for the future? Divergent takes you there in an action-packed sci-fi thriller. In a futuristic dystopian world, there are five factions of people that represent different virtues. Based on a book by the same name, this one will keep you on edge. Divergent offers movie goers an original plot, but it might not be for all movie goes according to this parental guide to the movies.

The plot revolves around a futuristic world divided. When teens reach a certain age, they must decide if they want to stay with their own faction or go to live with another for the rest of their life. Tris Prior has reached that age and must make that important decision. She and her friends must survive some difficult tests to be able to live out the life that they have chosen. These tests include psychological and physical trials. Tris believes that she may be one of a special class called a "divergent". Divergents do not belong to any one class. If she is a divergent, she would be put to death. In the end, her society starts to crumble and her powers as a divergent could save it, but it might mean the end of her.

This movie is violent, much too violent for those under the age of 10. In terms of violent content, it is on the same par as The Hunger Games, perhaps slightly worse. The topic of puberty, girls and boys talking about sex and other topics come up during the plot of the movie. There is some drinking and profanity throughout.  There are some intimate scenes between teenagers that include touching and kissing. There are lots of fist fights, shooting, knife fights, teens who die violent deaths. Teens must kills friends, and some commit suicide. This movie is not for the faint of heart at any age.

The entire mood of the movie is frightening, much in the way 1984 is frightening and the Hunger Games is frightening. It is world where the government has complete control and no one even questions authority. The government presence and be seen and felt everywhere, watching everyone, searching for violators. To be different in this society is to put oneself in grave danger. Divergents are considered dangerous and are hunted down to be killed. The society is ruled by fear, which is a recurrent theme throughout the movie. This dark, thriller is an excellent pick for the hardcore sci-fi fan, but this family movie review says proceed with caution when deciding to take the entire family.
