Say it with me, “Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” Mirror Mirror is a delightful twist on an old classic that this parental guide to the movies thinks is a fun treat for everyone. This Disney Classic has it all, an evil queen, seven rascally rebels, a handsome prince, dashing swordfights, all dressed in Tudor clothing. This family movie guide thinks that this is a must see for children of all ages. The only mystery about this one is the ending. This tale promises a different ending than the classic, but no spoiler, you will just have to go see what Disney has in store for yourself.
It was not rated a G due to fantasy action and mild rude humor. However, if you have read the original story to them when they were young, they already have an idea of what this is all about. The MPAA rater felt that the Queen’s Dungeon was just too creepy for the wee ones. The dungeon has crows, vampires, and scary werewolves, similar to the average haunted house designed for children. Several of the scary scenes include an attempted stabbing of Snow White, but it doesn’t actually happen, the knife is dropped. Snow White is attached by monsters and wild animals. The evil Queen meets her demise by falling off of a cliff. (Are they sure she is dead? I always thought that it would take more than that to off an evil queen,) Well, we know that she is really dead because vultures are eating her dead body, but this is only suggested, nothing gory.
Some scenes are similar to the haunted house at Disneyland, not the gory Jason haunted house that they will see in later years. However, to be fair, if your child reacts to these things, and you enjoy sleeping in your bed alone at night, you might want to steer clear. Every parent knows their child and how they react best, so we will leave this one up to you. I think that it is a delightful rendition of an old classic and loads of fun. This family movie review thinks that it is definitely worth a large popcorn or two.
