Soren, a young owl, is kidnapped from his home of Tyto and taken to the St. Aepolius Academy for orphan owls. He must face challenges on an adventure that takes him to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. He must fight evil with his friends to save his world. The children's book by Kathryn Lasky's comes to life on the big screen in 3D.

From the makers of Happy Feet this animated battle portrays the fight between good and the evil owls who wish to take over the world. The Legend of the Guardians: the Owls of Ga’Hoole story centers on a young barn owl that is kidnapped by the evil owls of St Aggies. St. Aggies is disguised as an orphanage, but it is really a secret plot where young owls are taken and brainwashed into becoming soldiers. Soren needs to escape St. Aggies and make it to the island of Ga’Hoole, in order to help the noble and wise owls in their fight against the wicked rulers of St. Aggies.

This delightful middle-earth like tale uses very real characters in the form of owls. The story has a classic heroic plot that is brought to life through the personalities of the characters. The story is a classic good versus evil plot. The hero must face seemingly insurmountable odds to save the owl world. The movie uses fantasy to convey some strong messages about perseverance and the ability to overcome obstacles. The MPAA rated it PG for scary scenes. I would go as far as to say that very small children should not see it, maybe below the age of eight. The heavy plot and the many action packed battle scenes makes it inappropriate for young children.

The MPAA rating indicates that there are scary scenes in this movie. The captured owls are kept in a zombie-like state and forced to stare at the moon. And the exquisite detail of this 3D movie makes the action battle scenes even scarier to young children. In the end, good triumphs over evil, the hero earns a place of honor among the Guardians and they live happily ever after. The overall message is about following your dreams, even if others call them silly. It is about reaching for goals and the power within to attain them, if only you believe.
