Parents Movie Review
The plot of the new and improved Karate Kid version is a direct spin-off from the original. A kid is forced to move to China due to a job relocation for his mother. In China, he enters a strange new world. However, this new world is not kind to him and he soon finds himself the target of a bunch of street bullies. The first half of the film has many scenes of violent fighting very much in the old Jackie Chen style. I would definitely not recommend this movie for children under the age of 12 due to the sheer amount and magnitude of street fighting in the first half of the movie.
Dre, the kid, meets Mr. Han (played by Jackie Chen), a maintenance man who happens to be a Kung Fu expert. Mr. Han takes him under his wing, much like Mr. Miogi in the first Karate Kid series, and teaches him the art of Kung Fu. Dre realizes that he must face his foes in order to stop becoming the target of bullies. This movie counters violence with bigger violence. The second half of the story still contains violence, but in a controlled manner, as it relates to the art of Kung Fu. However, in the end, even though the bullies and Dre face each other in the ring, it still sends the message that the way to counter bullying is by fighting.
The movie rehashes many of the old tricks from the first Karate Kid movie. For instance, instead of wax-on, wax-off, Dre must take his coat off and on. Mr. Han swats a fly with a flyswatter and removes it with chopsticks. These humorous moments depend on the audience having seen the first Karate Kid series and those who are new to the story may not get them.
