Johnny English is the ultimate spy who goes up against evil villains to protect the Chinese premier from would-be assassins. Any plot summary that contains the word “assassin” probably foreshadows the rest of the content, at least in the experience of this parental guide to the movies. This lively spoof on James Bond classics runs the gamut of the intelligence world, from the KGB, to the CIA, to the MI-7, this movie has them all. Don’t worry, this movie is a spoof, so there is not a high degree of realism taking place.
Johnny English has been training in the Asian mountains, but is called back into action to save the world again. The scenes of Johnny English’s training in the beginning of the movie is filled with laughs, but one of the characters is kicked in a sensitive area. I was a little surprised to find this in a PG movie.
Some of the humor might not have been appropriate for younger children. The fighting machine in the opening of the movie is not the only sensitive male blow experienced in the movie. They did clean up a few phrases. For instance, the movie makers proclaim, “Let’s kick some bottom.” Children who are old enough to understand the rest of the movie are old enough to fill in the blanks. They might think that they got away with that one, but this family guide to the movies thinks that it was a lame attempt to lower the rating of the movie. It is cute, but there is violence in the movie and lots of it. A kitty gets pushed off the ledge of a high rise building by accident and it is portrayed as humorous. You never really actually know what happened to the cat, but it is assumed that it is not good for kitty. There are numerous times when violence is portrayed as humor in the movie.
This parental guide to the movies would rate it closer to a PG-13, but it is apparently intended for 10-13 year olds due to the content. Whether or not you want your pre-teen to see this movie is a matter of individual decision, but this family movie review reminds parent not to jump in blindly on this one. You have been warned and it is up to every parent to decide for themselves.
