Into the Wild is an Adventure and Drama movie as well as a Biography. Emile Hirsch stars as Chris McCandless, a student athlete who graduates from Emory University and sets out to experience life in the Alaskan wilderness. The film was adapted from the novel of the same name. It was released to theaters in 2007 while the DVD became available in 2008. It is rated R for language as well as nudity.
The R rating of Into the Wild is well-deserved. However, it was nominated for 2 Oscars, with 12 wins and 36 other nominations between different awards ceremonies. As a result, many feel that it is a rewarding movie to own on DVD. The theme and content of the movie is geared towards adults so we advise parents to watch this movie first before deciding whether to share it with their teenagers.
Of course, different parents will have different feelings about Into the Wild. For that reason, it is wisest for parents concerned about its rating and content to watch the movie themselves first. If the overall message or creative value of the film is worth sharing, consider skipping over any portions of the DVD felt to be less suitable.
