After three deaths, John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) realizes he is Number Four. John is on the run from ruthless enemies sent to kill him. In the small Ohio town he is hiding in, John experiences his first love (Dianna Agron) and the realization of his powerful skill.

This adventure/thriller portrays the life of John, whose mysterious past makes him the target of aliens who wish to kill him. He is one of nine with extraordinary powers like him. The last three extraordinary kids are dead and he must run from aliens to keep from being number four. The main character tries to live the life of a normal teen, even though he is moving from place to place on the run. He has to blend in to keep from being discovered. John is always the boy without a past, and all he really wants is to be normal, but how do you be normal when you have strange superpowers and aliens chasing you?

This movie is based on a double conflict. The first one is the problem of being hunted by aliens who want to kill him. The second is trying to have a normal life, in spite of being hunted by aliens. The real conflict heats up when he falls in love. He has to decide whether to risk his life and stay with his true love, placing her in danger as well, or to leave it all behind again. If he stays, he places the remaining six and the entire human race at risk. Does he face the aliens or run?

I Am Number Four is a cross between a Sci-fi flick and a teenage romance. This movie has violence, intense action, adult language and a moral dilemma involving romance. It is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and for language. There is also a suggestive water scene with John and his girlfriend, but it does not show anything below the head. The romance in this scene is only suggested, but the scene is interrupted by the killer aliens. This is a teen movie and not appropriate for those under the age of 13.
This movie is not designed to be seen by families together. If definitely has a take the girlfriend and snuggle during the scary scenes quality about it. This family guide to the movies considers it a teen flick, not a family flick. It was designed with those who are old enough to borrow the car keys in mind, not those who have to be driven by their parents.
