Here Comes The Boom Movie Review for Parents

-by Ginger

Here Comes the Boom takes the audience into the world of Mixed Martial Arts. Scott Voss appears to be your regular, ordinary high school biology teacher who faces a crisis that has become all too common in today’s world. Due to budgetary constraints extra-curricular activities are being cut at his school. Scott Voss is not one to take this news sitting down. He decides to take it upon himself to do something about it. This parental guide to the movies has the scoop on how he solves this crisis.

For those who are not familiar with the sport, the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) is a violent sport, similar to boxing, only fighters do not only use one style of moves. They can use anything they know from any type of martial arts. They may combine boxing moves, kicking from Tai Kwon Do, Kung Fu, or simple street fighting. It is an anything goes sport. It is a violent sport and for those who participate, there is a high risk for injury, perhaps even serious injury. This family movie review thought you might want to know what you were getting into in case you were not familiar with the sport.

MMA has high purse prizes and Scott Voss saw it as a way to save extracurricular programs for the school and the students that he loves. Here Comes the Boom is a story of sacrifice and taking personal risk to help someone else. From that standpoint, this movie review for families sees some moral value in the story and a positive lesson to be learned. Now, onto the MMA…

There are a few uses of choice words such as a word beginning with “A” referring to losing a fight. There were a few “H” words as well, all in the context of the fighting arena. However, other than these few instances, they kept the profanity to a dull roar. Even the crowd was relatively well-behaved, at least compared to the real MMA fighting that they show on cable. The fight scenes were about as clean as they could get for MMA fighting. The fighting scenes were for a good cause that served the greater good.

The movie is for the most part “clean:” except for the blood and bruising. At first, Voss hides the injuries, but eventually Voss comes clean. He faces ridicule and criticism from the school administrators and parents because of his unorthodox fund raising methods, but in the end, he becomes a hero because his heart is in the right place. Here Comes the Boom movie may not be for those who are sensitive to violence, as in boxing ring type injuries. This is a hardcore, hard hitting movie. However, this family movie review has to give this one a lot of credit for keeping it clean…particularly due to the subject matter. Here Comes the Boom movie has its share of compassion and inspiration along with the bruises.
