This family movie rating guide takes a look at a creative and whimsical twist on the Shakespeare classic. This movie is a delight for all audiences. Did you ever wonder what those innocent little garden gnomes do when you are not looking? After this movie, you will know. This twist on Romeo and Juliet tells the tale of two warring families of garden gnomes. The families occupy neighboring yards separated by a solid yard fence. The two lovers, separated more by their warring families than by the yard fence, fall desperately in love and try many antics to come together. The story still uses the Capulets and Montagues as the rival families.

Although this story has many elements of the original play, to say that the movie is based on the play is to do so loosely. The Shakespearean play provides the basis for the movie, but don’t expect your kids coming away with an education. As a matter of fact, you might have to spend some time explaining a few "liberties" that were taken in the plot. For instance, I do not recall Juliet dressed as a ninja sneaking over the fence in the original. This movie is a lot of fun and the antics are nonstop. I could find no objectionable content, other than perhaps kissing. The romantic comedy is played in a way that makes it kid friendly.

From the makers of Shrek, Gnomeo and Juliet features the music and cartoon likeness of Elton John, oversized glasses and all. Throughout the movie, the cute little gnomes get into every kind of mischief imaginable, or perhaps unimaginable in many cases. Antics include lawnmower races and plastic pink flamingos. I can’t say much more than that without spoiling the fun. Does the twist on this classic end in a tragedy? You will have to take the kids and see for yourself. This parental guide movie review considers it great fun for children of all ages. Be sure not to miss it.
