Country Strong takes viewers into the drama that lies behind the country music scene. This movie tells the romantic tale of a songwriter on the rise, who falls in love with a former star. Starring county music giant Tim McGraw, this family movie has all that one would expect in the way of singing and first-rate country music performances throughout. The story is a drama and children below the age of 13 might not get all of the subtleties of the action between the adults. They might like the singing though, particularly if they are already country music fans.
However, focus on the country music scene means that there are elements of the movie that parents might not want their children exposed to yet. The MPAA rating for this movie is a PG-13. It is a PG-13 rather than a PG for themes involving alcohol abuse and sexual content. This parental guide family movie review agrees with the PG-13 rating. One of the rising stars was in rehab for a brief time in the movie. Many of the scenes involve drinking and the country music culture. These are elements that one might not want their children exposed to for several more years.
The portrayal of the country music scene is a realistic representation of the culture surrounding country music stardom. This movie presents country music stars as real people with real problems. Everyone is different and parents will have to make their own decision on this movie. If you take your young teens or younger children to this movie, just be forewarned that it shows adults in real adult situations.
