Child Car Seats.

There are different kinds of car seats available depending on the age and size of your child. Infant car seats are discussed elsewhere on this site, and children young children should continue sitting in seats with a five-point harness.
Once they are big enough, most children move on to using booster seats. These position the child to be correctly held and protected by an adult seat belt. Boosters come in high back and no back forms. High back boosters tend to protect better, especially in side-impact crashes.
Booster seats do not come with a strict age limit, and are instead recommended for children of whatever age until they are big enough to fit in a seat belt. People often make the mistake of claiming that children should be out of a booster at a certain age. As every vehicle and child is different, children will fit each seat a bit differently.
If you aren't sure whether your child is ready to use an adult seat belt yet, check to make sure the belt doesn't rest across his or her neck and stomach. It should be positioned along the collar bones and hips. If not, it can cause both internal and external damage if there is a collision.
Lastly, most child restraints come with an expiration date. Usually this is something like 5-8 years in the future. However, for this reason, it is best not to buy child car seats second-hand. Furthermore, if anything happens to the vehicle, it is probably a good idea to replace the car seat just to be sure.
