Battleship Movie Review for Parents

-by Ginger

You remember the family game classic by Hasbro. Two players sit facing each other and try to guess the position of the other’s armada. The game ends when the last sink has sunk and one player says, “You sunk my battleship.” This is the Battleship that we all remember and Hasbro now has made a movie based on its classic game of strategy and luck. Battleship is the story of an international ship fleet who must defeat an alien armada, while they themselves are in the middle of a war games exercise. The aliens are intent on destroying the earth and the fleet must defeat them in the ultimate game of “battleship.” This family movie review thinks the Battleship movie is an excellent action flick, particularly if you are a fan of violence, destruction and mayhem.

Battleship is a thriller, but it does have its share of content warnings. There is kissing in the movie. The main character is seen in a bathtub covered by water and ice to hide the exposed parts. He does stand up and put a towel on. There is one short bar scene, but it seems inconsequential. The aliens are frightening and may be too scary for little ones, or to those that are sensitive.

The Battleship movie is an excellent Sci-fi flick for those that are sci-fi fans. The Battleship movie is reminiscent of Independence Day in plot, but it is a very original take on the alien invasion plot. For those that don’t mind bombs, explosions, torpedoes, and other such action, this family movie is a good choice, but not for the little ones. Teens would enjoy it if they happen to like this type of movie. There are a few well-placed instances of profanity. They are largely related to anticipated violence and give the Battleship movie a sense of realism. There are only a few instances and they tried to cover up the actual word with a sound effect, similar to bleeping it out.

The premise of the Battleship movie is that someone answered all of those beacons that we have sent out searching for extraterrestrial intelligence. It is based on actual communications sent out by researchers. The Battleship movie asks the question, what if someone did answer? From the science standpoint, this movie is excellent. It is imaginative and stretches the possibilities of what it might be like, if someone actually answers our call.
