Baby Safety

When your newborn baby enters the world they will be completely dependent on you.  They rely on you for food, they rely on your for love, they rely on you to keep them clean most importantly they rely on you to keep them safe.  From the second you leave the hospital you are expected to place your newborn in a car seat, for no other reason than to make them safe.  While many parents understand the basics of baby safety, such as purchasing a car seat, they often times do not realize all of the household dangers that can be present.  Your home should be a safe place for your baby to live in and to, eventually, roam in.   Babies are extremely susceptible to harm and injury like choking, drowning, falling or even poisoning.  New parents need to be aware of all the areas of their house that pose a threat to their infant.  They can take simple measures that can aid in preventing harm for their baby.

Here are some common baby safety practices for your kitchen and your bathrooms.

-Toxic or poisonous materials should be kept in high places.
    - Equally, pills should be stored in high locations and should never be taken in front of your child.
            - Latches and locks should be placed on all cupboards and drawers .
            - Magnets in reach of the infant are not a good idea, they can be swallowed.
            - Trash should be in a location where it can not be reached or knocked over by your child.
            - Remove all soaps, razors and shampoos from the tub.
            - Cover the spout with a soft cover preventing your infant from bumping their head.
            - Make sure you leave your toilet lids down
            - Do not ever use automatic toilet bowl cleaners.

There are also baby safety precautions you should take within the nursery.

            - Mirrors, decorations and wall hanging should be placed out of reach
            - If items are mounted on the wall never put them above the crib
            - Mobiles are fine for newborns, but should be removed around 5-7 months so your child does not pull it down.
            - Change your baby only on a stable surface, like a changing table.
            -  When changing your baby never leave them un attended.
            - As in any room, make sure all electrical outlets are covered.

Precautions need to be taken around the house to promote baby safety.

            - Cover all electrical outlets.
            - Install blockers by stairs or other areas your infant could potentially fall down.
            - Cords and other objects should be removed from your child’s reach so that they do not pull objects down from counters or shelfs.
            - Your hot water heater should not be above 120 degrees to lower the chance of burns.
            -  Make sure all houseplants are out of reach so they aren’t knocked over and eaten.
            -  Vacuum regularly so that items are not located on the floor.
            - Plastic grocery bags and zip lock bags should be stored in high places or discarded immediately.
            - Keep emergency phone numbers near the phone in case of incident.
            - Some door stops can be broken and swallowed, make sure your door stops are appropriate.
            - Wicker baskets or furniture should be removed from areas your infant can reach
            - Do not use table cloths that hang over the edge and can be pulled.
            - Keep rooms with exercise equipment locked.
            - Remove all glass items, including tables, from reach of your infant.
