Baby Furniture

With the arrival of a new baby comes the inevitable purchase of baby furniture. Cribs, bassinettes, rockers and changing tables are all essential parts of caring for a newborn. All of these pieces of furniture can be found in a plethora of different designs and price ranges, but in most cases, all are relatively easy to find.

Probably the most common piece of baby furniture, the crib is extremely important. A newborn will spend a great majority of its time eating, sleeping and playing in the crib, and as such it is important that this piece of furniture be durable, comforting, and above all else, safe. Older cribs are often used because they are given as hand-me-downs or are found for less money than a new design. However, it is important to be careful when using older cribs, as many of them use crib rails that are spaced at wider intervals than current models. This can cause problems as it is easy for a small child to become stuck between the rails.

Located beside most cribs is another handy piece of baby furniture, the changing table. These tables are often designed much like a typical dresser, with some subtle variations. First, as the top is where the baby rests while being changed, a quality changing table will have a raised border around the edges. This makes it much less likely that the baby will roll too close to the edge and fall off when the parent isn’t looking. Secondly, these tables often contain a variety of drawers and pull out shelves that can be used for storage of clothing, diapers, wipes, and anything else that is deemed necessary.

Every baby needs a cradle. These pieces of baby furniture have been used to calm infants for centuries. They can be very simple in design or highly ornate creations, but the important aspect of any cradle is the smooth swinging motion. These motions can be created through a number of different methods. One of the most basic means is by resting the cradle on curved wooden rockers. These cradles require the caretaker to rock them manually, but are often the least expensive. Other designs use a central pivot point and a solid stand to create the swinging motion. These designs are often the more expensive options, but they allow for a great many variations, which results in many more options for the parent to choose from.

High chairs are also common pieces of baby furniture. They are mainly used to keep the baby at eye level while being fed by the parent. These pieces of furniture have traditionally been rather simple affairs. However, modern high chairs can be found in a host of different designs, many of which are quite unique. One should keep in mind though, the more intricate or modern the design, the more money you should expect to pay for it. Because of this, many first time parents either use a hand-me-down high chair, or opt for a less expensive model.
