Baby Einstein products are relatively new developments that try to use technology to provide interactive, stimulating toys for babies. The idea is to allow parents and their babies to help explore things together. The products are meant to encourage curiosity and discovery, and allow ways for parents and children to interact.
Baby Einstein products offer a unique blending of real world objects, music, language, nature, art, and more. This, again, is meant to provide your baby with a way of learning about the world in a way that is fun.
These products are meant not only to be interactive toys, but are also designed to encourage interaction between babies and parents. Whereas with some toys the idea is to leave the baby with a rattle or something else to occupy its attention, Baby Einstein products are in most cases meant to be used with the parents present.
The “digital board book,” for example, provides something similar to reading to your child—but you can also keep both hands free in order to point to various objects, or show things to the baby. Baby Einstein also markets DVDs with the same interactive purpose.
There have been those who have criticized Baby Einstein products because of the emphasis on DVD and electronic visual technology. Some suggest it is best for young babies not to use this kind of technology until they are about two years old.
Specifically, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that children under the age of two not watch any television. The Baby Einstein spokespeople suggest that it is not good for babies to watch programmed television and advertisements for hours, but that their products are designed to be appropriate for the development of those young minds.
Though the title “Baby Einstein” might suggest that the toys are designed to make the babies smarter, that is a bit misleading. More accurately, these products are designed to foster curiosity, creativity and interaction, which at the same time are of course qualities linked with the cognitive development of a baby.
The other biggest benefit of these products is the interaction they encourage between parents and their children. Many child development experts have cited this interaction as key in development during the first three or so years of a baby’s life.
Baby Einstein products are in some ways controversial for the emphasis they place on modern technology. At the same time, many parents swear by them for the way they encourage interaction between child and toy as well as child and parent. Whether these products are best for your baby will depend on your own opinion on the matter, as well as what your baby seems to enjoy.
